Steamboat Springs, Colorado is known having the most Olympic athlete residents (80, to be exact) living in it than any other US state. As a ski town, there are also plenty of rustic cabins, condos and A-frame homes scattered across the region. While skiing can be fun when you’re staying in one of these properties, it doesn't always equate to a luxurious ski vacation. To really up the ante here, you should consider booking the penthouse suites on the seventh floor of the Steamboat Grand Hotel.
Situated across from the main gondola and Mount Werner—its highest peak reaching 10,568 feet high—the penthouse puts you on the same level as the mountain’s highest point. Steamboat Grand rents these privately-owned condominiums out to skiers with a four-night minimum for $1,600 to $2,400 per night. Among the perks of the penthouses are their large size, measuring around 2,400 square feet.
Inside, the suite is decorated in Western motifs, with a marble bathroom and Jacuzzi tub, walk-in steam shower, sauna and fireplace in both the master living rooms. The dining room chandelier was a metallic rendering of the pine trees outside, and metal sculptures of Colorado wildlife sat on end tables and bookshelves throughout the living spaces.
Each of the three bedrooms has its own bathroom, and two of them have private balconies looking out on the mountain. When you take the elevator down to the main lobby to go skiing, all you have to do is walk across the street to pick up your skis and gear, where the hotel keeps a private ski locker for each guest.
You never need your car here either; just park it in the hotel’s lot for the entire time, even if you want to go into town for dinner, the hotel van can shuttle you there. It takes regular trips throughout the day and evening for guests and condo owners. We’ve stayed in lovely hotel rooms in St. Moritz and Davos, but, for ski lodging in the US, the penthouses at Steamboat Grand Hotel are pretty great.
