Louis Moinet BLACK MOON

Louis Moinet

When it comes to watch design there are many different approaches and genres. Generally speaking, most people prefer a more conservative aesthetic. Ultimately that means the classic uncluttered 3 hand design. In terms of horology, this translates into a traditional dress watch that would mostly be worn on formal occasions. However, I personally feel that there is scope to experiment with bolder compositions and contemporary materials without losing the overall essence. I became so fascinated by this subject that I wrote a book entitled ‘Timeless Classics', published this year (2024) by Schiffer Books. One of the brands that inspired this edition was Louis Moinet. All of their creations illustrate this point including the phenomenal BLACK MOON.

In modern watchmaking Luna themed timepieces have become very popular. That’s why I was very interested to hear that Louis Moinet had recently released a special limited edition watch (60 pieces) called the BLACK MOON. In comparison to many of the brand’s other models, this timepiece has a demure case measuring 40.7mm. Essentially this means it will appeal to gentlemen with smaller wrists and potentially the unisex market. Due to the use of Grade 5 titanium, this model is exceptionally light and weighs only 18 grams. Therefore, it would be an ideal choice with formal and casual attire.

Founder Jean-Marie Schaller explains “20 years after having acquired my first lunar meteorites, I felt like giving our nightly celestial companion a majestic vision” On the dial of the BLACK MOON Louis Moinet decided to create a large central disc with two lunar meteorites called Gadamis 005 (grey-white hue) and Dhofar 457 (intense black hue). Both have extraordinary textural qualities that perfectly represent the full and new moon. Other delicate details include a striking Aventurine backdrop, raised 3D indexes, dome sapphire crystal and a discreet open-worked small second counter revealing elements of the movement. Overall the design is very successful and the quality first rate.

Beneath the sophisticated façade lies a Swiss-made movement with astronomical moon complication. The Caliber LM110 comprises 29 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Additionally, the mechanism has a gear train with a 135-tooth wheel offering exceptional precision. This entire splendor is visibly showcased via a sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the BLACK MOON features hours, minutes, small seconds and moon phase indication that’s accurate to one day in 122 years. The watch also has a power reserve of 48 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters.
