Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong opened the Malay Heritage Centre in 2005 to gives visitors a chance to learn about the rich culture of the Malay community in Singapore. Educational exhibits on pioneers in such industries as publishing and medicine, along with interactive programs like playing traditional Malay games wau, traditional Malay kites, or main lereng, wheel spinning. The six permanent galleries can be found over two levels with artifacts to support the importance of the Kampong Gelam neighborhood as a flourishing port town before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in 1819.
