San Diego Events & Nightlife: Last week, as a precursor to Bikini Week, we told you that San Diego was going to attempt to break the world record for the largest bikini parade, right here in the Gaslamp. Hundreds of bikini-clad women showed up to march themselves up and down 5th, to the delight (and in some cases surprise) of bystanders. Michelle “Bombshell” McGee and creator of Bikini Week, Michael Lee, led the group cheering the entire way during the mile-long walk. Another parade is already being planned for next year, so if you didn’t make it down this year, be sure to be there next summer. Check out the slideshow to see what you missed, including girls of Playboy Golf and the San Diego Lingerie Football League.
San Diego’s Bikini Week officially kicked off last night at FLUXX , one of downtown’s latest nightlife scenes, just opening this past March. The same designers responsible for nightlife successes Side Bar and Stingaree also created the interior of FLUXX. “We’re calling the design of FLUXX ‘modern organic with sex appeal,” said Davis Krumins, of Davis Ink, “We introduced nostalgic objects from the past with an exaggerated approach, including a large-scale treehouse incorporated into one of the VIP tables. We set out to create a high-energy space that encourages adults to be kids again and travel back in time, yet in the context of an adult environment of a nightclub.”
FLUXX was very suited to the first party and runway show of Bikini Week, its playful and energetic personality jived perfectly with the atmosphere of the event. As club-goers piled into the venue, bikini models struck pose after pose as photographers took thousands of shots of the girls. VIP booths began to fill and attendees listened intently as the founder of this week-long event shared the primary reason for his endeavor: raising money for Global Flying Hospitals. Then, the DJ started spinning and at 11pm the runway show began. Featuring couture designer Francisco Medavog’s 2011 collection, bikinis that strutted the catwalk boasted designs that are creative, a tad flirty and definitely eye-catching. The vibe in the club was high by the conclusion of the show as the girls all came out on stage in support of their designer. After, camera flashes continued as photographers crowded to get shots of Francisco, Michael Lee and the girls of the runway.
JustLuxe will be covering all of the events and happenings surrounding Bikini Week, this is just the beginning. If you haven’t grabbed tickets yet, you should; it’s a lot of fun and it’s for a great cause. Parties and runway shows to come still include Stingaree tonight, Ivy Rooftop at ANDAZ on Friday, Hard Rock on Saturday and they are putting together an entire indoor beach at Horton Plaza for the Fourth of July.
