When Oprah went truffle hunting in Italy last month she made headlines because—well, she’s Oprah— but also because Italy is known for some of the most amazing truffles in the world. To celebrate the area’s famous white truffles, the National White Truffle Festival of San Miniato National White Truffle Festival of San Miniato is put on every November in Tuscany, just about a three hour drive from Milan. Now in its 44th year, the event attracts attendees from all over the globe for three weeks of culinary delight. In addition to the world-famous white truffles of San Miniato, there are truffle oils, salts and sauces, and the event also features other local specialties like wine, meats, cheeses, chocolate, breads, olive oil, honey, preserves and cakes. A prize is also given out to the largest truffle and oldest truffle hunter.
Held since 1969 in the Piazza del Duomo, the festival is also a great way for visitors to experience Tuscan tradition and heritage through cooking, foods, local art, products and displays. For rustic adventurers looking to immerse themselves in local culture, nearby farmers offer cozy accommodations in farmhouses for a more authentic truffle experience. Guided tours of the city are also available during the festival to round out your San Miniato excursion.
The 44th National White Truffle Festival of San Miniato will be held Saturdays and Sundays November 15-16, 22-23, and 29-30, and December 6-8.
