2024 marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s renowned winning performance of Waterloo at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, and a trip to Nikos Taverna on the Greek Island of Skopelos (via The O2, London) is the perfect way to commemorate this milestone. Originally opened in Stockholm in January 2016, MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY celebrated its fifth anniversary in London last month, and since opening at The O2, London in 2019, the critically acclaimed experience has welcomed nearly 500,000 guests from 110 countries.
Conceived by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus (who executively produces the show, along with Pophouse Entertainment) with the English book by writer, comedian and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY is London’s premier theatrical dining experience, bringing ABBA’s hits to life more strikingly than ever before. As the sun sets in Skopelos, guests take their seats at Nikos’ family-run taverna where they enjoy a delicious four-course Greek feast whilst a romantic and heartwarming story unfolds around them. Nikos is played by British popstar Antony Costa, who was part of the Brit award winning,multimillion-record-selling boyband Blue. Costa, who will continue starring in the experience until 15 November 2024, is joined by a cast including Lucinda Lawrence as Kate, Inês Fernandez as Konstantina, Henryk Firth as Adam, Georgia Morgan as Nina, Rosemary Annabella Nkrumah as Debbie, Oscar Balmaseda as Fernando, Dawn Spence as Grandma, Allie Ho Chee (at certain performances) and Rosie Rowlands (at certain performances) as Bella.
Food is at the heart of the experience and a menu has been created that delivers the finest food Greece has to offer, made from the freshest ingredients. The delicious four-course Greek feast is served as sharing platters between groups on tables. Following the performance, which is packed with timeless ABBA anthems, including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo, guests are encouraged to sing and dance the night away at a glittering ABBA disco.
MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY has music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (some songs with Stig Anderson), and a story by Calle Norlén, Roine Söderlundh and Björn Ulvaeus. The London version of MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY is co-directed and choreographed by Stacey Haynes and Roine Söderlundh, with set designed by Bengt Fröderberg, lighting designed by Patrick Woodroffe, sound designed by Gareth Owen, and costumes by Annsofi Nyberg.
