Tourists can now explore London’s landmarks with six new discovery trails populated by 83 life-sized 2012 mascots. Sculptures of Olympic mascot Wenlock, and Paralympic mascot, Mandeville, have been colorfully designed to capture London life and to reflect the sculptures’ surroundings. Designs include a Beefeater, a giant red phone box and a replica of Big Ben. The mascots were constructed using the scrap steel left over from building the Olympic Stadium. The two-metre tall figures are part of "Stroll," six walking tours designed to encourage Londoners and tourists to explore the capital’s highlights and hidden attractions on foot. Smartphone users can scan a QR code on the base of the mascots to discover more about the area of London they are in or download the London Official City Guide app.
The app features interactive maps to help people follow the trails and find every mascot. Mayor of London Boris Johnson said, “Wenlock and Mandeville are instantly recognizable characters, and life-sized embodiments of the excitement of London 2012. I can't think of a more suitable pair of tour guides to help Londoners, families and tourists alike get to know the capital a bit better and add to the magic of the Games during this summer like no other.” Stroll is a part of the “Mayor of London Presents” program of free cultural events and attractions being staged across the capital to celebrate the London 2012 Games.
