Stars and thespians gathered in New York City’s Upper West Side last night to celebrate the talent and beauty of the 2016 Tony Awards. While the musical Hamilton took home a staggering 11 wins including Best Musical (just short of the record-breaking 12 Tonys for The Producers), it was the stars of the red carpet that were the real winners. On this theatrical runway, bold color and feminine detailing were the preferred looks. Lucy Liu, a presenter for the evening, opted for a bright yellow Zuhair Murad Couture gown with 3D floral appliqués. Danai Gurira, actress and playwright, also chose a yellow dress, a Rosie Assoulin gown in a saturated golden tone. Perennially best-dressed actress Lupita Nyong’o, who was nominated for her Broadway debut in Eclipsed, opted for a stunning rainbow sequined Boss gown. In addition to the colorful and multi-toned dresses, attendees at the award show also wore small silver ribbons as a way to show their solidarity and support for the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando. Tonys host James Corden opened the evening with a message for the victims and their families: “Your tragedy is our tragedy. Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, and gender is equal, embraced, and loved. Hate will never win.”
