Roccafiore Winery is so much more than a dedicated family winery crafting unique vintages from locally grown grapes in Italy's Central Umbria. Situated in the Village of Todi, their 200+ acres features a 360° panoramic view of the hilly landscape defined by extensive forest, olive groves, over 30 acres of micro-terraced organic vineyards. Not only is the landscape spectacular to behold, it has profound influences on the grapes grown here.
Winemaker Hartmann Donà's craft vintages using native grapes like Grechetto di Todi, Trebbiano Spoletino, Sangiovese, and Sagrantino nicely complements their onsite Residenza Roccafiore and Wellness Center. The winery's modern architecture replicates a converted industrial space of cement, steel, and glass yet is rooted in traditional wine making...the centuries-old ecological balance of soil, DOC appellation microclimate, and heirloom vines.
Harvesting is done quickly with only the best hand selected bunches reaching the press. The resulting grapes fall directly into the tanks without the aid of machinery cutting down on fruit stress. Maturation for each varietal is slightly different further enhancing the unique flavor experiences like:
Fiordaliso 2013 Blanco
This wine is only dry at first sip then quickly morphs into more fruity floral characteristics. 85% Grechetto di Todi and 15% Trebbiano Spoletino grapes are fermented 6 months in stainless steel followed by 1 month in the bottle yielding a hint of fresh greens with a slightly bracing citrusy edge. The mouth feel is an effervescent buzz with even minerality. Faint cooling honey suckle on the nose with spiciness lingering on the palate moderates the fruit sugars. With a faint yet consistent effervescence, the yin and yang of astringency and fruitiness play divinely well together.
Fiorfiore 2012
A perfect balance of tannins tempered by a lively fruity-nectar-citrus triad. Made from 100% Grechetto di Todi, natural fermentation begins in stainless steel for a few weeks followed by a year in large Slavonian oak barrels and finally 4 months in the bottle.
Prova D’Autore 2011
This blend of 40% Sagrantino, 30% Montepulciano, and 30% Sangiovese yields a smooth velvety mouth feel. Clean yet faint honey suckle meets bramble berry on the nose. A smooth honeyed aura on the palate has a plum-like sweetness rapidly popping into tart cherry and fully ripe blackberry. A peppery finish keeps it from being similar to a Pinot Noir. After aging in stainless steel for roughly a month, the process continues for 2 years in French barriques before spending 6 months in bottle before distribution.
