This year only nine hotels where introduced to this list. Montreal’s Ritz-Carlton has the perfect combination of luxury relaxation and fun, which helped land it on this prestigious list.

In an age where most travelers refer to online consumer reviews before booking, Five Diamond status is still important to high-end travelers, says luxury travel agent Laura Allen of Atlanta-based Century Travel.

"Sometimes, we (travel agents) need ways to describe a property and by saying, 'It's Five Diamond,'" she says. "It helps us make a sale. It validates a property in the mind of a client - it's instant affirmation and clout that the place is going to be good."
