A Look at Mexico's First Overwater Bungalows

Mexico is known for a great many things, but of all the reasons to visit, overwater bungalows probably never made it onto your list. Destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, Tahiti and Bora Bora have long been the go-to spots for those seeking that kind of accommodation, until now. On September 1, El Dorado Maroma in the Riviera Maya opened 30 new palafitos (stilt houses in Spanish) over the Caribbean Sea, marking the country’s first overwater bungalows.

The all-inclusive resort is a AAA Four-Diamond property and is about a 45-minute drive from the Cancun International Airport. With the debut of their bungalows, guests now have the option of “sleeping with the fishes” during their stay. Upon arrival, travelers are escorted past the main lobby and into the palafito’s exclusive lobby for check-in and a flute of Champagne.

After learning your personal butler’s name and getting a lay of the land, you’ll be directed to your villa. The bungalows are laid out in a T-shape, with an overwater restaurant sitting at the top of the T and the spa on its far right edge. The sand-colored palafitos feature thatched palapa-style roofs and come with a small infinity pool, glass bottom floors, an outdoor shower, direct access to the ocean, a king-sized bed and a deck with a sofa lounger and dining table.

The first thing you might notice is that the villas aren’t especially spacious, they are however, intimate and cozy. They are meant for two guests max and are separated into three distinct interior areas. The dining table, mini bar and an armoire sit right off the door. The center of the room features the bed and sliding glass doors leading to the deck while off to the side is the bathroom with a separate shower, Jacuzzi tub, closet and a door that opens out onto the pool.

Tucked away in the corner, the main closets are a bit cozier than we’d prefer, and lack an interior light. So digging for clothing in your carry-on can be tricky. To remedy this, utilize the complimentary unpacking service. In the evenings, the glass-bottom floors can be covered with carpets so the interior remains dark during bedtime. As a part of turndown service, silk robes are left for each guest, a unique detail that we loved.

Although your all-inclusive rate includes a few of the other restaurants on site, you’ll most likely find yourself dining at the Overwater Grill & Wine Bar or in your room. Open for all meals, the eatery is beautifully designed with natural elements creating a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere. The food here is definitely not your typical all-inclusive fare either. Expect small portions, creative platings, rich Mexican flavors and a fine dining atmosphere.

The full resort features a spa on property but palafitos guests have their own private facility. Náay Spa incorporates the ancient Mayan principles of earth, wind, fire and water to create balance within the body. But if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous to do during the afternoons, the resort’s activities center offers anything from kayaking to paddle boarding, speed boating, parasailing and camel riding. There are also yoga, cooking and dancing classes throughout the week. But let's be honest, this type of vacation is all about beachside cocktails and sun-kissed skin.

We wouldn't call the palafitos "over-the-top luxurious," but they definitely provide a more-upscale option for guests visiting the hotel. Plus, the service is great—whether you’re on the beach, in your villa or at the spa. The overwater bungalows are also a style we’d like to see be utilized more on the Caribbean side of Mexico. Palafitos begin at $950 a night and include on-demand butler service, 24-hour room service, exclusive beach beds, customized beach picnics, pre-dinner drinks and pre-arrival requests.
