Hyatt is bringing its luxury Alila brand to Southern California, right here in San Diego – or the coastal bluffs above North County’s Grandview and South Ponto Beaches to be precise. Located at the intersection of Coast Highway 101 and La Costa Avenue and enjoying postcard-perfect panoramic Pacific Ocean and lagoon views, Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas is a landmark oceanfront project for the global hospitality company.
The 130-room hotel (whose name “Marea” means “tide” in Italian and Spanish) is being designed by San Diego-based Joseph Wong Design Associates to blend seamlessly into its surroundings using natural building materials and native plants. Terms like “casual elegance” and “barefoot luxury” have been used to describe the concept, whose interiors are being designed by Mark Zeff Associates. While the resort's ocean-view restaurant with rooftop patio, swimming pool with pool bar, luxury spa, and infinity-edge hot tub promise to become unabashed scene stealers.
In keeping with Encinitas’ surf culture and quintessential beach town feel, guest activities will include surf, paddleboard lessons, and yoga, plus hiking and cycling. Committed to sustainable tourism, Alila’s bike valet and electric vehicle charging stations add bonus eco-credentials – as does a new, publicly accessible staircase and walking path, providing direct access to the beach below for locals and visitors alike.
Alila means “surprise” in Sanskrit, and a signature of the hotel brand is its Alila Experience – authentic destination experiences for guests incorporating the local culture and community spanning everything from adventure and food to romance. In keeping, a series of suitably inspired offerings will be available at Marea.
Part of World of Hyatt, Alila has 14 luxury properties around the globe in locales such as Oman, India, and Indonesia. Their first new-build resort in the Americas, Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas, is expected to open in early 2021 and will add to Hyatt’s growing Alila portfolio, joining Ventana Big Sur, as its second hotel in California and the U.S.
