Lovers of modern art will want to stop by the Pipilotti Rist exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in London this season, as the visual artist will be offering an immersive experience to visitors of the gallery. Rist has transformed the space into a sensory environment with two new videos projected onto the walls, shown in simultaneous presentations.
Entitled Worry Will Vanish, the videos use three-dimensional animation to visually journey through the human body. Known for trying to connect with her audience on deeply emotional levels, the gallery invites guests to come inside the main installation, take off their shoes and sit (or even lie down) with others on the carpet and duvets scattered on the floor of the exhibit. Meant to break down social and physical barriers, the audience sits close to one another and is also encouraged to walk around during the exhibit as “their own shadow onto the gallery wall serves to enhance the interaction between the body and its environment.”
This play on the body and its interaction with the environment is at the root of Rist’s piece as her videos focus on patterns in the skin—most notably the pushing, pulling and movement of the flesh to create different textures. Showcasing this relationship between ourselves and nature, Rist moves seamlessly from the human body to mirrored images in nature such as the veins of a leaf or strings of a spider’s web, suggesting that our connection with the world is more than meets the eyes.
The score for the piece, Worry Will Vanish Horizon, was composed by artist and musician Anders Guggisberg in collaboration with Rist, and is meant to evoke a “joyous celebration of audio, texture and color.” Worry Will Vanish runs from November 27, 2014 to January 10, 2015 at Hauser & Wirth Galleries in London.
