St. Patty’s Day is this weekend and there is no better place to celebrate than Boston. In a city that’s said to have more Irish than Ireland, Beantown is loaded with all things Gaelic. Our favorite pick is the return of The Saw Doctors Saturday evening, who will be performing at the House of Blues. The band hails from the west of Ireland and is best known for their 1990 hit song “I Useta Lover,” which became one of the biggest selling Irish singles of all time. The energetic musicians can always be seen on stage poking fun at their own locality, accent and idiomatic use of language.
The Saw Doctors got their start when they were discovered in the City of Galway by Mike Scott of The Waterboys. Scott invited them to go on tour, producing the band’s first single, “N17." The song featured the Waterboys’ saxophonist, Anthony Thistlewaite who The Saw Doctors have since adopted as their bass player. “I Useta Lover” became the second release from The Saw Doctors and quickly became the number one single on the Irish charts, remaining there for nine weeks. Since their initial trip to the United States in 1991, the band has returned nearly 80 times.
The Saw Doctors is comprised of members Davy Carton (vocals and guitar), Leo Moran (vocals and guitar), Anthony Thistlethwaite (bass guitar, saxophone, vocals), Kevin Duffy (keyboard and vocals) and taking over for Eimhim Cradock, 22-year-old Rickie O'Neill on drums.
