New England has so many incredible destinations but Portland, Maine remains one of our favorite places to visit with its rich maritime history and short driving distance from Boston. There is so much to do in this waterfront city from visiting the local shops and restaurants that dot the main downtown streets to taking a day trip on a boat to a nearby island.
Located about two hours from Boston, we headed up to the Portland Harbor Hotel for a quick Friday night escape. The historic hotel is centrally located in the Old Port District right on Fore Street in downtown Portland.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hotel’s valet, who assisted with our luggage and quickly whisked our car away to the hotel’s garage. We took the elevator upstairs to the pet friendly hotel (our bulldog in tow for an additional $25 pet fee) and checked in with the welcoming attendants at the front desk, who presented a yogurt covered lobster cookie to our four-legged friend.
We stayed in a luxurious Jacuzzi suite that had a beautiful view of the courtyard garden and water fountain below. The spacious room featured a separate sitting area with couch, His and Her armoires, an enormous Jacuzzi tub and separate glass-enclosed shower stall.
For dinner, head downstairs to Eve’s at the Garden for an authentic taste of Maine made with local seasonal ingredients. The hip restaurant features a Maine tomato sampler featured two ways (classic chilled tomato consommé and insalata caprese) and a Maine lobster risotto with green peas, Asiago, bacon and parsley.
There always seems to be something going on year round in Portland from an art walk, chowderfest and beer festival to an ice bar (created during the winter months), concert series and Old Port festival; so be sure to check the calendar of events on the hotel’s website to see what is in store when you visit.
If you do want to stray from the property, be sure to inquire about use of the complimentary bicycles or Lincoln town car service. There is also an on-site spa (Nine Stones), which offers everything from rejuvenating facials to their customized stone therapy.
Portland Harbor Hotel is located at 468 Fore Street in Portland, Maine. For more information, call (207) 775-9090 or visit PortlandHarborHotel.com.
