More than 300 lots will be available for Christie's first exclusive online wine sale in early August. The Signature Cellar sale will feature fine and rare wines ranging from top Bordeaux and burgundy to cult favorites from Bandol and Napa Valley. The wine sale is the first of a series of online-only events that will run parallel to auctions occurring at physical locations.
The launch of the Signature Cellars event is a significant step in forging the direction of the auctioneer's global e-commerce strategy, as all of the browsing and the bidding for it will occur online only.
“As a collecting category, wine lends itself very well to a global, online-only auction platform,” said Scott Torrence, VP and senior wine specialist for Christie's, in a prepared statement. “Online bidding has been a major component of our live saleroom-based wine auctions for more than five years now, with consistent participation from clients at the highest price levels. As a way of doing business, online-only sales are a very natural progression that provides our clients with even more opportunities to build and broaden their collections of fine and rare wines.”
The auction house's estimated prices of the lots range from $200 to $35,000. Featured labels will include Montrachet, Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Pétrus, Château d’Yquem, Bandol, La Tourtine, La Migoua and Cabassaou, Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Cristal.
The online bidding for the Signature Cellar sale opens August 6 and runs through August 20, 2012.
