Duffle coats, duffle coats everywhere! For the Maison Margiela Fall/Winter 2016 men’s collection, outerwear was the star of the show, and the menswear staple was seen in a variety of colorways, cuts and fabrics. Elongated, tailored, oversized, sleeveless, layered, fringed, double-breasted, single-breasted—almost every imaginable rendition of the coat was present on the runway. The duffle closure was even found on blazers just to drive the point home.
Motorcycle jackets and dress coats took a backseat to the rest of the collection, but were not to be missed. Some of the best pieces in the show were the slim-cut overcoats paired with even slimmer suits. Motorcycle jackets were bold and came in eye-catching patterns and textures like a knee-length black, white and red piece, or a cropped, navy blue puffer-style cut. The satin bombers were on-trend and wearable—we imagine we’ll be seeing these pop up on style stars in the coming weeks.
To keep the collection from looking too structured, a mix of loungewear was paired with every look. ‘90s-era spandex bike shorts peeked out from under the bottom of loose-knit sweaters and blazers. Sweatpants were deconstructed and left with unfinished hems. Lycra tops and legging with athletic labels clashed with the well-done outerwear and left something to be desired.
