Trading in his signature street-ready style for something a little more romantic, Yigal Azrouël’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection took a new direction this season. Using his well known neutral palette, the collection was a softer reinterpretation of his architectural details and fabrics. Lace and embroidery reigned supreme, but were worked in seamlessly with some of Azrouël’s more traditional favorites like leather, twill and wool.
The collection was a surprising evolution from his normal aesthetic of graphic detailing with an edgy, downtown vibe. It maintained a modern and architectural feel, despite pieces veering toward the romantic with lace panels, floral detailing and embroidered appliques. “It’s about going from step to step and showing that progression,” Yigal Azrouël told Vogue. Here, pieces that seemed almost Victorian in nature with high necklines, lace interests and jabot collars, were kept modern with the help of cutouts and angular silhouettes.
Of course, the collection wasn’t entirely lace paneling and modest necklines. Stark angles, slits and zippers kept the collection new and on-trend. Motorcycle jackets were given embroidered chiffon sleeves and captured the collection’s transition beautifully, while cape-like suiting was found on jackets and dresses. It was a successful blend of both old-world elegance and contemporary streetwear.
