Versace is synonymous with sex, skin and scantily-cut pieces that are known to highlight the female figure. But for Atelier Versace Couture Fall 2015/2016, Donatella showed a softer side with flowing gowns, skin-baring but tasteful dresses, and an aesthetic that fell somewhere between flower child and rock star. “I call the collection tough, but ethereal at the same time,” she told WWD backstage after the show. “I wanted to explore the softer side of the Versace woman.”
And explore it she did. The collection was bright and bold with just enough movement and romance to keep it light without sacrificing the look Versace is so well known for. Cutouts, corsets and slim cut dresses came down the runway, but when adorned in frills, layers, lace and bell sleeves they seemed less severe and more wearable for a night out. And these looks were clearly made for evening—Donatella is not making day wear for Atelier Versace.
Gowns were dramatic and included a diverse selection of mini dresses, flared ball gowns, slip dresses, thigh-high cuts, and open-split bottoms. The variations in lengths and style were pulled together with pastel tones and romantic details like lace panels or delicate layers. Even fitted mini dresses and column dresses done in corsetry, cages and sheer mesh seemed softer than previous collections. It was a successful foray into a more wearable and dreamy side of Versace.
