Whether you’re psyched to see your home team play in this year’s Super Bowl or you’re just watching for the commercials, there’s no denying this year’s game will be one to remember. This year’s Super Bowl is the NFL’s 50th, a major milestone that’s not going unnoticed, especially by the CFDA. This season, the NFL and CFDA have joined together to create CFDA + NFL Super Bowl 50, a capsule collection of bespoke footballs celebrating the anniversary of the game.
If you’re thinking that football and fashion rarely mix, it’s true, but almost everyone loves a charitable cause, whether they enjoy watching bone-crushing tackles or not. The footballs, designed by 50 members of the CFDA, will be auctioned off to benefit the NFL Foundation which supports the health, safety and wellness of athletes, youth football and their communities. The balls will be on display at the NFL’s NYC offices, the NFL Shop at Super Bowl, the Super Bowl 50 restaurant and other events and pop-ups around the San Francisco Bay Area. They will be up for auction at NFL.com from January 20 to February 12.
This isn’t the first time that the NFL and CFDA has teamed up to benefit the NFL Foundation. In 2014, they partnered with Bloomingdale’s to create a collection of fantasy football helmets for Super Bowl XLVIII. While the NFL declined to reveal the total amount raised in the first fundraiser, they did note that of the 48 helmets sold, the John Varvatos piece was most expensive, selling for $5,055. Hopefully, this year they can raise even more.
