Recently New York Fashion Week has been falling apart at the seams, and now it looks like they’re taking Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim with them. The Miami-based fashion event is held annually and has been gaining some serious traction over the years as both indie and established brands have been expanding into swimwear. But now IMG, owners of NYFW, have chosen to cancel this summer’s shows as they “redesign” the successful runway collections.
"As part of IMG’s ongoing evolution of its fashion events business, the company is redesigning Swim Week to create a modern offering that better reflects the unique needs of its designers and partners," IMG said in a statement. “To best execute a change of this scale, IMG today announced it will postpone its July 2015 Swim Week event in Miami, FL until 2016.”
Of course, we expected that some changes would take place at NYFW’s sister event, especially since there has been so much chaos in New York. Within the last few months NYFW has lost Mercedes-Benz as a sponsor, gotten kicked out of Lincoln Center and acquired Made Fashion Week. With so many balls to juggle it doesn’t come as a huge surprised that they would put Swim Week on hold to focus on their bigger shows, but we are hoping this doesn’t turn into an extended hiatus.
For those that still need their seasonal dose of bikinis, independent fashion week Funkshion Fashion Week Miami Beach will still take place from June 15-20 and local trade shows will run from July 18-20.
