There is pizza and then there is Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. If you haven’t yet experienced one of their pies, you are in for a tasty treat. The Florida based restaurant recently opened the first location in Massachusetts at University Station in Westwood.
We recently visited on the first night open to the public. While most opening nights can be rife with long waits with inexperienced servers, our experience here was quite the opposite. Each server was knowledgeable, well trained and extraordinarily attentive.
What makes Anthony’s so special is their commitment to delivering a good product. The restaurant does not have freezers, microwaves or fryers. All of their food is delivered fresh daily with tomatoes from Italy, dough made fresh in-house and selecting top notch ingredients like Grande mozzarella.
We got started with a sampling of their coal oven roasted chicken wings served with caramelized onions on top of focaccia bread, one of the most delicious orders we have ever tried. The 800-degree coal burning oven gives the finished product not only an incredible flavor but aroma as well. The slow cooked meatballs in marinara sauce with ricotta cheese should not be missed.
As for the pizzas, we recommend a traditional cheese or the specialty white made with ricotta, mozzarella and Romano cheeses. Each arrived in their famous “crispy” well done fashion made even flavorful by the coal fired ovens. The restaurant also serves up a variety of sandwiches and Italian dishes like broccoli rabe and sausage, pork ribs with vinegar peppers and eggplant Marino (our favorite named after restaurant partner and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino), thinly sliced served in a tangy tomato sauce topped with Romano cheese.
