Kate Maxwell Stockholm has an impressive lineup of fine places to have a glass of wine or a savory meal, but the Swedes just aren't satisfied with a top notch lineup – they're driving to make it legendary with even more great restaurants and locales like the newly opened Gaston. If you're looking for a city with fine dining, Stockholm takes the cake.
Stockholm’s fine dining scene has exploded over the last decade: Restaurants like Volt, F12, and Mathias Dahlgren offer spectacular New Nordic fare with the wine lists to match, and a particular emphasis on vins naturels.
But it’s been tricky to get a decent glass in the city without a multi-course tasting menu on the side—chilly Scandinavia is, of course, not a grape-producing region with the wine drinking culture of its Euro cousins, and all bars in Sweden are obliged to serve food, which has meant that wine has rarely been the focus.
That’s what makes Gaston, which opened in Stockholm’s medieval old town a couple of months ago, so exciting.
