Tequila and wine bars step aside. Seven Grand, which recently opened on San Diego’s University Avenue, is clearing a space for whiskey aficionados and music lovers alike. Although the bar also has a draft beer and cocktail menu, Seven Grand’s extensive whiskey collection is the crowning glory of the newly minted establishment. The original can be found in downtown LA and like its forbearer, the bar features a wall of whiskey with an international profile that represents countries from Europe to Asia.
In addition, the bar also hosts a bi-monthly tasting for those interested in going the Seven Grand Whisky Society. “Spirit Guide” Pedro Shanahan leads discussion and sampling of rare whiskies that are both classic and contemporary. A yoga teacher as well as whiskey expert, Shanahan is attempting to break new ground by creating his own special educational program on the beverage. “There is no Whiskey Sommelier program in America,” Shanahan said, “so we’re going about creating our own.”
The annual membership costs $120 and allows those who join to bring a guest to the society events. This summer will also see Seven Grand San Diego’s series of live music, including several jazz line-ups. So take a break from your old watering hole and check out Seven Grand to find, as they put it, “Drinks to Separate the Gentlemen From the Boys and the Ladies From the Lushes.”
