There’s more to the City of Brotherly Love than cheesesteaks and a centuries-old, cracked bell. While Philadelphia is known for its rich history and plethora of museums and art galleries, the city also has a forgotten past. Cory J. Popp, a local filmmaker and journalist, is setting out to uncover these hidden mysteries and little-known locales in his new project—a bi-weekly video series called Uncover Philadelphia. For urban explorers (and those who wish they were), this show is about to be your new guilty pleasure.
In the first episode Popp heads to the abandoned Reading Viaduct Tunnel, a mile and a half of broken caverns buried underneath the city streets of Philadelphia. As he and a team walk through, snapping pictures of graffiti, cracked ceilings and light pouring in from either end, it’s easy to see how the once popular train route has decayed over the years—and why it’s such a treasure. “Uncover Philadelphia is a video series exploring the many awesome places in Philly,” Popp explains. “Every two weeks I'll take you somewhere new, some old favorites, and places you never knew existed.”
