It’s said to become Paris’ first digital museum of fine art and will offer art aficionados a new way to view large-scale, projection-based exhibits. Set in the 11th arrondissement, L’Atelier des Lumières (The Workshop of Light) will open in 2018 inside the renovated remains of a 19th-century factory on the Rue Saint-Maur. The museum will focus on the greatest names in art history.
The 2,100-square-foot building features 26-foot-high walls and plenty of concrete and steel walls/spaces that will act as canvases for the art. To project the art, the museum will utilize a state-of-the-art system to cast the collages, mosaics and paintings onto the walls. Guests will be met with floating pieces by artists such as Chagall, Bosch, Breugel and Klimt, all to the sounds of original soundtracks composed for each body of work.
The captivating experience will bring each piece of art to life in a more immersive and interactive fashion. Partial funding for the project has been provided by the Fondation Culturespaces, whose Carrières de Lumières museum in Les Baux-de-Provence already offers digital exhibits throughout the year. With the help of 27 speakers, 100 video projectors and a piano score by Mikhaïl Rudy, the current exhibit focuses on the œuvre of Chagall. L’Atelier des Lumières will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a rotating schedule of events.
