Broadway will soon be hitting the streets of New Orleans for their 2015/2016 season. Among its lineup are adult favorites such as The Book of Mormon and Cabaret, and family-friendly staples like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. With a good range of musicals to be seen, NOLA’s locals and visitors have plenty of reasons to hit the theater in the coming months. Here are four shows not to be missed:
Newsies — December 1-6, 2015
One of our personal favorite Broadway shows, Newsies is an action-packed musical that loosely tells the story of the 1899 New York City newsboys strike. Filled with thrilling choreography, catchy songs and great costumes, the show is one not to be missed. The dance numbers alone are worth the ticket. In 2012, Newsies won a Tony Award for Best Choreography and Best Original Score.
The Book of Mormon — March 8-13, 2016
The Book of Mormon is the story of two young missionaries on their way to Uganda to convert its residents to Mormonism. It is an old-style musical composed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone along with Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez that maintains a modern sensibility. Upon arriving in Africa and seeing firsthand the poverty and violence in the country, the pair quickly learn that converting the locals will be much harder than they expected.
Wicked — May 25-June 19, 2016
The Tony award-winning production goes back in time before Dorothy ever walked the yellow brick road, and tells the story of two witches, Glinda and Elphaba in the land of OZ. Elphaba, born with emerald green skin is firey and misunderstood, while Glinda is beautiful and well-loved. As they grow, you’ll find how each become good and wicked. With words and music by Stephen Schwartz, the show continues to break box office records, winning accolades at every turn.
Cabaret — April 5-10, 2016
Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall's 1998 revival of the Kander & Ebb musical, takes place at the infamous Kit Kat Klub in pre-WWII Germany. Emcee Sally Bowles’ chorus girls take to the stage to excite the weary crowd trying to survive through dangerous and uncertain times. Follow Bowles’ call and grab a front row seat for this divinely-decadent show.
The rest of the lineup includes The Little Mermaid, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Kinky Boots, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Motown the Musical. Attendees can opt for either one of two packages: a six- or seven-show bundle, or can purchase each musical à la carte.
