When Design Hotels planned the opening of their newest property, The Principal Madrid, they hoped it would be popular with its turn-of-the-century architecture, opulent suites and rooftop bar—but little did they know just how popular it would become. Only a few short months after its grand opening, the hotel is one of the hotspots of the area, catering to locals and visitors alike. It’s the first five-star hotel on the Gran Vía and it draws guests in with its Spanish history, unencumbered views and modern luxuries.
The Spanish Renaissance-style building dates back to 1917, and perfectly encapsulates the time period both on the exterior and interior of the property. Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs decorate the facade, and high ceilings, marble floors, large windows and iron railings can be found within. The hotel boasts 76 spacious rooms and suites as well as the Ático Restaurant & Bar, a rooftop terrace and bar, a sundeck, a year-round pergola and, of course, one-of-a-kind views of the Madrid skyline.
While the traditional décor of the building remains intact, a modern touch has been added to bring the property into the 21st century. “We wanted to create a mix of styles: influences of a posh British club, the flamboyance and glamor of a palace in France, and the modern masculinity of a Manhattan loft,” designer Pilar García-Nieto explained. These luxurious little touches can be seen in the reception area, in each room and suite, and in Chef Ramón Freixa’s Ático Restaurant.
“We wanted to capture the era and feel of the grand hotels that were once sprinkled across Europe,” hotelier and owner Pau Guardans added. “Most of them were linked to this concept of ‘traveling without speed’, which is an old concept and at the same time a very modern one. This idea of slow travel, taking advantage of time, truly discovering a location. With The Principal Madrid I want to redefine the Spanish luxury hotel market and create an authentic and holistic experience for our guests.”
