The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk has been exhibiting across the United States, showcasing the luxury fashion designer’s provocative work that ignited ideas revolving around sexuality, gender issues and multiculturalism. Curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, the exhibit features a multimedia look at the world through the eyes of Gaultier, including sketches, fashion photography, video clips detailing his celebrity collaborations, as well as textile design.
If you missed its North American tour, the exhibit will now be travelling to Madrid to make its European debut. From October 6 to January 6, 2012, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier can be viewed at the FUNDACION MAPFRE along with over 120 haute couture pieces that reflect the 35 years Gaultier has contributed to the fashion industry. A few additions have also been made for the exhibits European debut. The Madrid exhibition will include a montage illustrating how Spanish culture, from flamenco dancers to toreros, influenced the designer’s work.
The Madrid tour will also feature five costumes designed by Gautier for films by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, showing the artistic process from sketch to final product. Of the exhibit curator Loriot said, “From Swashbucklers and Samurais, to Chic Rabbis and Madonnas, Jean Paul Gaultier's diverse influences for his couture and ready-to-wear collections have always been eclectic, surprising and daring. As someone who initiates trends instead of following them, you discover in his work his passion for different types of beauties. No matter your age, shape, skin color, or gender is, everyone is welcomed in his universe.”
