Jan. 6th, 2025

No matter when you come during the season,  it seems that it snows there at least every other day. Each morning the mountains are covered with a fresh blanket of snow. A shimmering expanse of white covers everything, with drifts rising as high as 3 meters or 10 feet. This is Zürs, nestled in Austria’s Arlberg region—one of the world’s most sought-after destinations for skiing. Among its standout accommodations is the Hotel Edelweiss, a boutique gem offering a lively and welcoming atmosphere to unwind after a day on the slopes.

Located in the snow-draped Austrian Arlberg mountains, Zürs offers an alpine escape that feels both timeless and effortlessly stylish. This intimate village is where skiing isn’t just a sport but a way of life, cherished by those who value exclusivity over excess. The Arlberg region boasts the largest interconnected ski area in Austria and one of the most extensive in the world. The Arlberg region is as diverse as its ski offerings. Its destinations range from lively hubs like St. Anton, known for its vibrant après-ski scene, to Lech, which exudes exclusivity and attracts a mix of American, Russian, and European elites. Then there’s Zürs, a serene and refined village that caters to a distinct clientele—those who appreciate understated luxury and skiing without so much flash.

Zürs am Arlberg

Zürs am Arlberg offers a serene retreat for discerning travelers, a place where generations of guests return year after year.   Unlike the bustling après-ski scenes of St. Anton or the ostentatious exclusivity of Lech, Zürs appeals to those who value privacy, tradition, and sophistication. Unlike flashier destinations, Zürs appeals to old-world money rather than the nouveau riche.  This is a haven for quiet wealth, where the affluent come not to flaunt but to savor the pristine beauty of the Arlberg region.

This intimate village, nestled at over 1,700 meters in the Austrian Alps, blends rustic Tyrolean architecture with world-class luxury. Cozy chalets and boutique hotels are tucked against dramatic alpine backdrops, creating an ambiance that feels both exclusive and welcoming.

Days are spent carving through Zürs' renowned slopes, celebrated for their abundant snowfall and seamless lift access. Evenings bring refined pleasures: retiring to luxurious accommodations or enjoying exquisite dining at the village’s gourmet restaurants.

Zürs am Arlberg: A Premier Alpine Destination

Widely regarded as the birthplace of alpine skiing, the Arlberg region in western Austria stands as one of the world’s finest ski areas. Anchored by resorts like St. Anton, Lech, and Zürs, it boasts Austria’s largest interconnected ski area.

The skiing there is, quite simply, unparalleled. Zürs, nestled within the expansive Ski Arlberg region, provides access to 305 kilometers of groomed ski runs and 200 kilometers of off-piste terrain, making it a prime destination for skiers of all abilities. Its slopes are thoughtfully varied, offering 132 kilometers of easy blue runs, 123 kilometers of intermediate red trails, and 55 kilometers of demanding black pistes. With an average snowfall of 10 meters per season, Zürs consistently ranks among the snowiest resorts in the Alps, ensuring reliable powder conditions throughout the winter.

The Flexenbahn lift links Zürs seamlessly to Lech, St. Anton, and other villages in the Arlberg network, offering an interconnected ski area that is both expansive and accessible. Among its iconic experiences is the White Ring circuit, a 22-kilometer loop that weaves through scenic Alpine villages and rewards skiers with ever-changing vistas. For those drawn to untouched snow, Zürs is renowned for its freeride zones, where vast fields of deep powder await. Advanced skiers will find thrills on the legendary Madloch descent and the challenging black runs scattered across the region.

For an added dose of adventure, heli-skiing on the nearby glaciers provides access to pristine, high-altitude terrain and extends the possibilities well beyond the marked trails. Whether carving through its meticulously prepared pistes or venturing into its untamed backcountry, Zürs offers a quintessential Alpine ski experience framed by dramatic peaks and an ever-present blanket of snow.

Learning to Ski Where Alpine Skiing Began

Zürs am Arlberg holds a special place in skiing history. The first ski lesson in the Alps was taught here in 1906, and Austria's first ski lift was built in Zürs, cementing its status as a pioneer of alpine ski culture.

Today, the ski schools of Lech Zürs continue this legacy with decades of expertise and innovative teaching methods. Catering to all skill levels and ages, these schools offer group lessons, private instruction, and tailored programs. Beginners can master the basics on gentle slopes under the guidance of certified instructors, while intermediate and advanced skiers refine techniques, tackle challenging terrain, or venture off-piste.

For those seeking exploration, Zürs provides guided tours led by expert mountain guides. These tours reveal the Arlberg’s diverse terrain, from hidden powder fields to steep couloirs, offering both adventure and breathtaking alpine vistas.

Whether you’re learning your first parallel turn or chasing backcountry thrills, the ski schools and guides of Zürs offer an unmatched gateway to alpine mastery and unforgettable memories in the Austrian Alps.

Away from the slopes

Beyond its renowned slopes, Zürs offers a quieter side of winter, inviting visitors to connect with the landscape in more contemplative ways. The winter hiking and snowshoeing trails there reveal an unspoiled wilderness blanketed in silence, where each step crunches softly beneath your feet. Guided snowshoe tours open up the pristine backcountry, winding through forests and across glistening meadows, while paths like the Zürsersee circuit offer a chance to experience the alpine scenery at your own pace.

Evenings in Zürs carry a distinct elegance. The après-ski culture there leans toward the understated—lounges with soft lighting, fires crackling in the corner, and a curated selection of fine wines and cocktails. Conversation flows as effortlessly as the surrounding snowmelt streams, and the atmosphere is one of quiet sophistication rather than revelry.

A Night You'll Never forget at the the Flexenhäusl

A few minutes drive from the hotel on the edge of Zürs, the hut offers an alpine dining experience that's both traditional, surprising, and beyond exhilarating. The cozy, intimate space, with a capacity for about forty, is warmed by a fireplace and adorned with rustic décor.

The ambiance sets the stage for a feast featuring Fondue Chinoise, where guests cook their own meats in a flavorful bouillon, later sipping the broth as a comforting soup. Traditional sides, served family-style, include potato salads, pickles, and seasonal vegetables, creating a hearty spread. Wines flow freely, enhancing the communal, celebratory vibe.

As dinner wraps up, the energy shifts. The lights dim, and suddenly, music pumps through the space—disco lights flicker, and what was once a calm dinner turns into a chaotic and raucous dance party. Chairs are cleared, and tables become makeshift dance floors. Guests wave sparklers, while bartenders dazzle with flaming cocktails.

The intensity rises even higher when the waiter, now a fire-breather, adds his daring performance to the mix. The night continues into the early morning, where shots are shared, and laughter fills the air. This unforgettable transformation, from serene dinner to unrestrained celebration, happens every night—even on a Wednesday.

Beyond Zurs

For guests staying for the week, they may wish to get out and explore the surrounding villages. Saint Anton is known for its pulsating apres ski and trendy bars while  Lech offers its own allure, a picture-perfect village where a gentle river winds through snow-laden streets. One fascinating experience to take in while in the area is Skyspace Lech.  Designed by James Turrell, this unique underground structure features an oval 'Sensing Room' with a dynamic dome that creates changing light effects, visible only during sunrise and sunset. The experience, lasting about 45 minutes, is a meditative experience, its interplay of light and landscape connecting the natural and the transcendent.
