As the biggest natural outdoor amphitheater in the United States, the Hollywood Bowl has quite the history. Though it traces back to 1916, the first official "Symphonies Under the Stars" event didn't take place until 1922, with Alfred Hertz conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic (it is also the summer home of the L.A. Philharmonic). Since that day, people have been flocking to the wide open spaces of the Bowl, either buying tickets for a seat or tickets for the grassy knoll in the back.
