Designed in 1938 by Swiss-born architect William Lescaze, the CBS Radio Building at Columbia Square is a designated Los Angeles’ Historic-Cultural Monument. It’s also home to the city’s most stylish cultural center meets private work and social space, NeueHouse Hollywood. Intentionally built for broadcast, artists like Orson Wells, the Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan all recorded there, while Lucille Ball fans might be interested to learn the pilot episode of I Love Lucy was filmed in Studio A.
Today, the Streamline Modern structure is the cultural home to a new generation of film, design, fashion, and architecture entrepreneurs. Open to members and the public there are several can't miss experiences running this summer, including an exhibition of rare photographs by Andy Warhol and a pop-up collaboration with Chef Ray Garcia of Broken Spanish fame.
Andy Warhol: Photo Factory
Paying homage to Warhol’s iconic New York City studio and offering an intimate visual diary of the artist’s life and work, Andy Warhol: Photo Factory is a groundbreaking new exhibition of ultra-rare photographs, many of which were kept in a private collection, including 20 that have never been seen before. The largest West Coast exhibition of Warhol photography to date will be open to the public until mid-July. In addition, on Thursday, July 8, there will be a special After Hours event hosted by modern pop music duo More, celebrating the release of their debut E.P., along with DJ sets plus exclusive screenings of rare Warhol films.
Speakeasy Pop-Up: Bar Sala
Downtown LAs' genre-bending Mexican restaurant Broken Spanish may have shuttered last year, but its visionary owner Chef Ray Garcia is back in collaboration with NeueHouse thanks to speakeasy-style pop-up Bar Sala. While the menu will include an agave list, housemade agua fresca, Mexican craft beers, and small plates from Garcia’s Broken Spanish residency at NeueHouse, visitors can also look forward to tableside mezcal and tequila tastings from the roving agave cart. Open Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. reservations for the bar are not required.
Listening Bar: In Sheep’s Clothing
Another DTLA favorite that sadly also shuttered last year, Japanese-style ‘listening bar’ In Sheep’s Clothing will be hosting a series of pop-up listening sessions playing select records four nights a week at NeueHouse. Running from June 23 through August 21, each evening will offer different programming around classic albums, rare find artists, musical movements, and audiophile equipment accompanied with cocktails, wine, and food.
NeueHouse Hollywood is located at 6121 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles. Visit neuehouse.com or call (323) 337-1420 to schedule a tour and say hello.
