Tacotopia, an immersive taco-inspired exhibit taking space right on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica features more than 20 taco-themed environments where the visitors can take inspiring Instagram photos, play around and even do a Cholula Hot Sauce tasting.
As prevalent as tacos are right now in the Mexican and Mexican-American culture, nobody really knows what their origin is. There is a theory about how they were initially born in the silver mines of Mexico, where tacos were these explosive charges made by miners by wrapping pieces of paper around gunpowder and insert them into holes to break down the rock face. The first actual references to the word “taco” in any type of archive or dictionary come from the 19th century. And one of the first types of tacos described is called “tacos de minero” (miner’s tacos).
Back then, both in Mexico and in the United States, tacos were seen as street food, usually associated with lower-class, but a lot has changed since then. From elevated tacos to mixed cuisine and fusion tacos, this little mexican inspired snack has become so prevalent in our lives, we rarely ever give it a second thought. That’s until the larger than life playground, aptly called Tacotopia takes residence in Santa Monica.
Visitors can swing on a lime with a glass of margarita, sit in an avocado chair, pretend to be the filling inside a taco and even ride the mechanical taco or jump into a giant bowl of avocado foam.
Visitors can even test their skills in a Lucha Libre ring or swing in a tostada bowl.

Tickets are available online at Tacotopia and the exhibit is open in Los Angeles until September 2nd, 2019.
