A floral adorned bottle of Perrier-Jouet Champagne boasts a name synonymous with luxurious celebration. Accordingly, the US debut of a limited edition design of cuvee Belle Epoque 2004 calls for a perennial pop of a cork. The iconic anemone flowers painted by French glass artist Emile Galle in 1902, which wrap around the bottle, have received a gilded update. Renowned Japanese artist and floral architect, Makoto Azuma relishes the task.
Azuma eloquently pays homage to Galle’s Art Nouveau design, by respectively handcrafting a motif of delicate gold blossoms to the bottle. Furthermore, Azuma flexes his floral expertise, creating a botanical piece inspired by the bottle’s artwork. An arrangement of delicate succulents surgically suspended in mid-air within a cube frame and dotted with white Japanese anemones, adorned a private room at Katsuya, in Brentwood for the bottle’s unveiling.
Holding a glass of Perrier, Azuma, via translator, shared his inner motivations with attendees. “I wanted to make something extraordinary," he said, "taking inspiration from the sensation of champagne inside the mouth, and the delicate movement of the ivy and leaves with a special attention and tribute given to Emile Gallé’s anemones.” And although the unique floral renditions sparked conversation and plenty of iPhone snaps from party guests, it did not outshine the delicate flavor of the acclaimed cuvee, which were finely complimented by sushi hors d'oeuvres.
Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Floral Edition is currently available only in very limited quantities worldwide. A suggested retail price of $199.
