On April 1, Hotel Eden will officially reopen following an 18-month restoration project overseen by architect and interior designers Bruno Moinard and Claire Betaille of 4BI & Associés and Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku from Jouin Manku. The property, located in the heart of the old city of Rome, now holds 98 guestrooms and suites (formerly 121), a refreshed dining scene and an urban spa and blow-dry bar.
Originally built in October 1889 by Francesco Nistelweck, Hotel Eden quickly made a name for itself in Rome’s burgeoning Ludovisi district. The property was so prestigious that the world’s royalty flocked to its front door to stay within the hotel. Monarchs such as King Alfonso XIII of Spain, Prince Paolo of Serbia, the Grand Duchess Olga of Russia, Princess Teresa of Bavaria and Queen Amelia of Portugal have all slept inside the famed property. And now, 128 years later, the hotel has once again been restored to its former beauty.
Along with overseeing the restoration of the lobby and meeting rooms, Moinard and Betaille were tasked with updating the previous guestrooms and reducing the number to offer more spacious accommodations. The pair utilized natural light emphasized by tall windows and high ceilings within the rooms, offering a more airy and relaxed experience.
Hotel Eden’s créme de la créme offering, however, is the Bellavista Penthouse Suite located on the rooftop. The retreat boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, a living room, dining area for up to eight guests, hardwood floors, a study and a master bedroom. The master bath features marble vanities, mosaics, Italian Bottega Veneta toiletries, a walk-in rain shower, and an oversize circular bath.
A new addition to the hotel, Eden Spa is an urban space that includes three spa suites, a blow-dry bar and a nail salon. Guests will be treated to holistic wellness experiences and therapies from Sonya Dakar’s skincare line and Officina Profumo - Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. The property is also home to three dining venues spearheaded by award-winning executive chef Fabio Ciervo. All three eateries were redesigned by Jouin Manku who drew inspiration from traditional Italian craftsmanship.
Open throughout the day, Il Giardino Ristorante & Bar serves classic Italian pasta dishes while La Terrazza is a more sophisticated restaurant offering a seasonal menu of Mediterranean dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. At La Libreria, guests can snack on light fare and enjoy afternoon tea or a post-dinner drink while listening to live piano music in the evening.
With its April opening, guests can take advantage of Rome’s beautiful springtime weather, when the hot and humid temperatures won’t hinder your outdoor activities. For your best bet, book a room in May before peak tourist season or in September when high average temperatures are between the mid-70s and the lower 80s. Guestrooms begin at around USD $717 a night.
