Whether we are ready to accept it or not, the summer is quickly coming to a close. It will soon be time to break out the boots and scarves and start looking toward some cold weather travel locales. We decided to bypass fall destinations for a moment to mention a luxury ski resort that caught our eye—and for good reason.
Located 50 miles east of Geneva, high in the Swiss Alps at an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet, is The Lodge, Verbier, a Virgin Limited Edition property. It is part of Sir Richard Branson’s collection of high-end retreats situated in some of the best travel destinations around the world.
The Lodge can accommodate up to 18 adults and six children, making it a great place to get away with the entire family or a group of friends. There are nine bedrooms, with two master suites offering sweeping vistas up on the top floor. The spacious appointments contain private balconies, centerpiece fireplaces, cozy sitting areas, large soaking tubs, rain showers and stunning views of the snow capped mountains in the distance. If the chalet has not been exclusively booked and you’re traveling with a smaller party, individual rooms can be reserved.
During your stay, the attentive and experienced staff of 13 will ensure all expectations and needs are met. A Necker Island General Manager, activities coordinator, spa therapist, trained chef and chalet dog, Bam Bam are among the friendly faces you’ll get to know throughout your visit. The chef can whip up Swiss and international cuisine for a formal dinner, picnic or breakfast with the kids. Guests are also free to explore the wine cellar and its impressive selection of vintages.
Access to the slopes is a mere minute van ride away, with the most advanced skiers opting to ski directly from The Lodge to the lifts. Regardless of your skill level however, there are runs for everyone along the Four Valleys. You have your choice of cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or even paragliding or heli-skiing, an exhilarating choice for the adventure lovers in your group.
When it’s time to head back to The Lodge after a day on the mountain, a myriad of activities await. Soothe sore muscles in the indoor pool, steam room or Jacuzzi, or take in a quick workout at the gym. Your whole group can get together in the party area stocked with books, games, DVDs and a karaoke machine. You can also lace up your skates and glide around on the mini ice rink while taking in the beautiful Swiss scenery.
Rates for the 2012-13 winter season are based on exclusive hire of The Lodge for 18 guests at seven nights. Prices range from approximately $87,250 (CHF 82,500) to $158,300 (CHF 149,700). The Lodge is available year-round, so if the cold, snow and skiing isn’t your thing, keep it in mind for a fun family vacation when next summer rolls around.
