The Chicago Athenaeum

In case you didn't know, an athenaeum is a space filled with books, periodicals and newspapers, generally kept for literary or scientific purposes - so right away it's obvious what The Chicago Athenaeum is known for. Taking it a step further, this cultural hotspot is also known as an International Museum of Architecture and Design, focusing on industrial/product design, graphics, landscape and structure architecture, and urban planning.

Their impressive permanent collection includes pieces designed and made in Chicago from 1900 to 1960 (like pioneer examples of the camera and radio), the work of influential female figures like Anne Swainson and Ellen Manderfield, catalogues of graphic design from the 1930s, and photography archives filled with images of historic buildings that may or may not still exist.
