Pop art may have first appeared in the mid-1950s in Britain, but Pittsburgh-born Andy Warhol is the name that has become the most synonymous with the movement. He’s basically the definition of, “if you build it, they will come,” when it comes to the art world. Because if a gallery or museum displays or sells his work, people will flock to it. Instead of merely highlighting Warhol though, Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte, NC is taking a fresh look at the artist through his relationship with fashion designer friend Roy Halston Frowick.
The two talents rose to fame in their fields around the same time, and they influenced one another’s work in interesting ways. You know Warhol’s portrait of Jackie Kennedy Onassis wearing a pillbox hat? The hat was designed specifically by Halston for the Flotus and is one of over 40 pieces featured in Halston and Warhol: Silver and Suede. The exhibit runs through June 14.
