Opened on the nation's centennial on July 4, 1876, the MFA housed 5,600 works of art in Copley Square before moving to Huntington Avenue in 1909 where it still sits today. Currently, it is one of most comprehensive art museums in the world with nearly 450,000 works of art and around one million visitors each year. From ancient Egyptian to modern art, guests are invited to discover all genres of art through innovative educational programs and special exhibitions. In 2010, the museum underwent significant expansion and added the Art of the Americas Wing, while the west wing was transformed into the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art in 2011.
