The city of Springfield, Massachusetts suffered an immeasurable loss eight years ago when a tornado tore through the downtown area destroying much of the city. Since then, they have worked to revitalize the area with the major milestone opening just last year – MGM Springfield, which was designed to incorporate the authenticity of the city.
Whether you come here for dinner and an intimate show at the nearby Symphony Hall or bigger acts like Aerosmith and the Dropkick Murphys at MassMutual Center, or try your luck at the casino tables and check out a comedy show at Roar! Comedy Club at the Armory, there is something for everyone. The two million square foot development with 125,000 square foot gaming floor at the world’s first LEED Platinum-certified gaming resort encompasses 14 acres within three downtown city blocks.
This boutique $960 million five-story hotel offers a perfect fall weekend getaway (or staycation if you are local to the area). Book a stay in one of their 252 guestrooms that range from a comfortable Springfield King to the sprawling Presidential Suite. Each room here is designed to reflect the inspiration of the history, architecture and literacy legacy of the city.
Stop by the literary themed Lobby Bar that pays homage to Emily Dickinson, Milton Bradley and Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known to all as Dr. Seuss) and order up a creative cocktail served in a pufferfish sculptured glass. The bar places an emphasis on gin and features spirits from regional distilleries, including Berkshire Mountain, Privateer and Hartford Flavor Company.
For dinner, we recommend making a reservation at the sexy Chandler Steakhouse, which is located in the former Union House Hotel (later named The Chandler Hotel) that was built in 1846. Today, the sophisticated restaurant offers some of the best cuts of Midwest Angus beef in town (think 32-ounce tomahawk ribeyes, slow roasted prime rib and 21-day dry aged strips) as well as creative appetizers like the Chandler sushi roll and Maine lobster cake.
Be sure to head over to Commonwealth Bar & Lounge in the center floor of the casino for a nightcap and order up a classic cocktail from their tableside old-fashioned cart.
A visit to MGM Springfield would be remiss without a reservation at their spa. Sign up for an indulgent 50-minute couple’s massage to melt away your stress and finish off your visit here with some time spent relaxing in the steam room. (From here, there is direct access to the teak-deck resort pool).
Spend some time checking out the nearby retail outlets that include the first ever apparel store of Indian Motorcycle, the family owned Hannoush Jewelers that was founded in Springfield and Kringle Emporium for a sweet treat. TAP Sports Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy some pork wings and a mushroom Swiss burger paired up with a craft beer while taking in a Boston sports game from one of their 60 high def flat screen TVs. After lunch, head to the bowling alley tucked out back or experience the virtual simulation Topgolf Swing Suites for some fun for the whole family.
If you prefer more casual dining, head to the South End Market off Main Street that features fast-casual spots like Wicked Noodles, a pan-Asian restaurant; Jack’s Lobster Shack, offering lobster rolls and New England-style clam chowder; an all American eatery at Bill’s Diner; and healthy options at the Hearth Grill.
Another fabulous dining option is Cal Mare, the on-site restaurant by renowned Chef Michael Mina, that offers coastal Italian fare like their signature lasagna rotolo made with slow cooked Bolognese and Maine lobster served scampi style.
Seasonal entertainment on the outdoor Plaza includes a skating rink, live music, yoga classes, a farmer’s market and during the warmer months Food Truck Fridays featuring local flavors like Wahlburgers which will also be opening a restaurant here next year.
