We Bostonians have recently been under the microscope for our fashion sense or according to some sources, lack thereof, but now is the time for us to sound off with resounding style. Meet Alton Lane, the luxury, custom men’s clothing label that is opening on Newbury Street on October 10. We had a chance to catch up with Colin Hunter, the brand’s co-founder to discuss what he hopes to bring to Boston.
Colin Hunter: When I was working in finance, I realized that in order to dress well, I would either have to spend thousands of dollars or go to Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren and buy clothes that didn’t fit well. All of our showrooms are by private appointment and are designed to feel like a residence with flat screen TVs, custom leather couches, etc.
JustLuxe: Tell us about what a customer can expect on a first visit.
CH: They can come in and relax knowing we are going to create some clothing to match their own personal style. Our Boston team is born and raised here so they know the city well and we have incorporated that into the design with images from Martha’s Vineyard and an old Betsy Ross flag painted on the wall. We want each location to feel local, unique and comfortable.
JL: Alton Lane, which has locations in New York and Washington, DC, also utilizes a Virtual Design Lab 3D body scanner, from which they can extract 400 measurements to create suits, shirts, trousers, blazers, tuxedos, overcoats and ties.
CH: This allows us more time to get to know the client. We cater to each guy individually. I like the fact that Boston is a close-knit city and is more intimate. Newbury Street is a great location for the brand. Our sales reps are trained to get you into the price point you want whether it’s a $525 suit or a $4,000 one. All of our clothing is hand made with fabrics from Italy, England and Scotland.
JL: Any future plans to expand?
CH: Definitely. We want to be an international brand within 15 cities over the next five years or so.
Looks like the brand has already paved a clear path to success. Alton Lane will open at 91 Newbury Street in Boston.
