If you are looking for a quick weekend getaway from Boston without having to jump on a plane, look no further than Mohegan Sun. The casino, located in Uncasville, Connecticut, is less than a two hour drive from Boston and offers a fun-filled weekend of fine dining, entertainment and gambling.
From comedy to magic shows to rock and country concerts, every night Mohegan Sun has something exciting going on. I checked out the Masters of Illusion Show, held in the main Mohegan Sun Arena, for an unbelievable performance that included showgirls being seemingly sliced in half, musical entertainment and audience participation. Main concerts are held in the Mohegan Sun Arena, but you can also check out free concerts in the Wolf Den, located in Casino of the Earth (below).
I stopped into Chef Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain for dinner and was glad I did. The restaurant features a variety of comfort food dishes with a Southern flair such as the smoked chicken, Hatch Green Chile Spoonbread with a black pepper vinegar sauce, and the duck with dirty wild rice, pecans and bourbon. I began my culinary sampling at Bobby Flay’s with an addicting grilled flatbread pizza topped with double smoked bacon, caramelized onions and toasted garlic. For dinner, I tried and loved the crispy buttermilk fried chicken with honey, pink peppercorns, lime and black pepper biscuits. However, the winner of the table was the rib eye, cooked to perfection, with a side of griddled mushrooms and onions. Don’t miss the sinfully rich red velvet brownie sundae with cream cheese ice cream or the banana bread pudding for dessert.
After dinner, I checked out a few of the best fashion designers which included Coach, Cache, Lux Bond & Green, Swarovski and Tiffany & Co. Other places for the best shopping are Citizen Watch, Godiva Chocolatier, Brookstone, LUSH and Puma.
There are three casinos located at the Mohegan Sun –Casino of the Wind, Sky, and Earth, all of which offer slot machines, table games, poker rooms and daily tournaments. Even if you aren’t a big gambler there are so many other things to do at Mohegan Sun; from restaurants and spas to shops and entertainment, you can keep yourself busy all day and night. Restaurants include Big Bubba’s BBQ, Lucky’s Lounge, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, Jasper White’s Summer Shack, and Tuscany by Todd English. Don’t miss the bustling Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville for some fun entertainment. The favorite spot for a nightcap during my trip was Leffingwell’s Martini Bar. Later, make sure to head upstairs to Wombi Rock, a glowing three-story white onyx mountain where you can relax in a plush, comfy chair while viewing the stars overhead in the world's largest indoor planetarium.
I didn’t have a chance to visit the spa during this visit, but Mohegan Sun has an on-site full service spa, Elemis, that offers everything from facials and massages to stress relief and exotic treatments.
