The future of automobiles aims at offering staggering performance while switching gears towards alternative energy resources and optimizing its overall efficiency. BMW has been experimenting with electric plug in the last decade before launching their first purely electric car – BMW iX. This flagship model from the German automaker uses the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept. The SAV concept has already been termed as the latest technology for the brand and why wouldn’t it be, the prototype offers an eclectic design along with a staggering 300-mile range.
The BMW iX harnesses the latest innovations in the fields of electrification, automated driving and connectivity to deliver a mobility experience that puts people more than ever at its heart. “The BMW iX shows how we can give new technologies a very modern and emotionally engaging design. The car is technologically highly complex, but it feels very clear and uncomplicated,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. The clear and minimalist design on the exteriors with clean structured lines while on the interiors the dash features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a center-positioned 14.9-inch curved touchscreen infotainment system.
The flagship car uses the Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology which encompasses the two electric motors, the power electronics, the charging technology and the high-voltage battery – guarantees exceptional efficiency yielding an output of 370 kW/500 horsepower. The BMW iX goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 5.0 seconds, a rare sight for fully-electric automobiles. The 300-miles range is another great feature of the car given the tough EPA standard tests.
The car uses DC charging fast charging at up to 200 kW that means you can add 75 miles (120 kilometers) of range with just ten minutes of charging. It takes about 40 percent for the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent of its full capacity. As the engine is now completely electric it requires less cooling, thus the kidney grille has been transformed into an intelligence panel. A camera and radar system is also fitted behind a transparent surface.
Similar to its sibling the BMW X5 in shape and size, the BMW iX features an aluminum spaceframe and innovative Carbon Cage that can claim extremely high torsional stiffness, which in turn enhances agility and maximizes occupant protection, while minimizing weight. The BMW iX is set to go into production at BMW Plant Dingolfing from the second half of 2021 as the BMW Group’s new technology flagship. While the brand hasn’t revealed all the features yet, we think this flagship would change the automobile industry for good!
