Grey's Anatomy star, racing enthusiast and car collector Patrick Dempsey will participate in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world’s most famous motor races, at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. As we reported the other day, in 2013 Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic 911 sports car. Steve McQueen made the race, which takes place in France on June 22, famous in his 1971 film Le Mans in which the King of Cool himself raced a Porsche. Dempsey last participated in the legendary endurance race, which lasts 24 hours, in 2009 at the wheel of a Ferrari F430 GT. The 911 GT3 RSR will be fielded by the actor’s own team, Dempsey Racing, in collaboration with Italy’s Del Piero Racing and Germany’s Proton Competition.
“It's a dream come true,” Dempsey tweeted after being selected to compete at Le Mans. Dempsey Racing and Del Piero will also field a pair of Porsche 911 race cars in the GTC class in the 2013 American Le Mans Series. Last year Dempsey raced an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC), and he has also competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The actor has a Porsche 911 in his personal car collection, as well as examples from Jaguar, Ferrari, Lotus and Mercedes-Benz.
