In recent years, men’s style has gained quite a following. Now it’s almost impossible to hit the streets of Men’s Fashion Week without seeing a hoard of well-groomed gents peacocking outside. Designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony are tapping into the growing market with a conceptual collection inspired by the works of Syd Mead, a neo-futuristic artist who has designed for Sci-Fi films like Tron, Blade Runner and Aliens.
Opening Ceremony’s RTW Fall/Winter 2016 collection takes the idea of conceptual sartorial designs and reworks them into wearable, everyday pieces. Using bright colors, unexpected textiles and multi-layered function, Leon and Lim have created a beautiful blend of form and function. Highlights include items like a short desert boot that transforms into a fitness trainer with the addition of a sport sole, and a silk bomber that reverses into a cotton hoodie.
The collection consists of classics—a mock turtleneck, a fuzzy sweater, a simple blazer—that have been elevated into something worthy of a street style star. Mead’s prints were used on t-shirts and sweaters. Jackets and blazers were done in knitwear and velour, while a cable-knit sweater was given a colored stripe made of fleece.
