Most watches boast the strength of steel or titanium, but Rado opted to add a new piece to the popular True collection, the True Open Heart, a timepiece made of a weightless high-tech ceramic. Unveiling the new watch as part of their 2016 Baselworld collection, it comes in two different colorways—a matte black or polished white, both with an ultra-fine 0.6 mm-thin mother-of-pearl dial that allows the wearer to catch a glimpse at the mechanics just beyond.
Inspired by the weightlessness of “floating through time and space,” the True Open Heart is built to be ultralight and adapt almost immediately to the temperature of the skin so that it feels like there is nothing on the wrist. The ceramic is engineered from a material that weighs 25 percent less than steel, with a durability rating that is nearly five times harder. It’s also hypoallergenic so even those with the most sensitive skin can enjoy the beauty of the piece.
But the watch’s true beauty is found in its “open heart” movement which can be seen under the sheer dial. Cutouts in the watch face allow the timepiece’s mechanics, like the 11 1⁄2 ETA C07.631 automatic movement, to be viewed without interrupting the simplistic beauty of the watch face. Each edition comes in a limited number of 500 pieces each engraved and numbered on the back casing.
