For Spring 2017, Berta Balilti presented at the Harvard Club, showing her collection of avant-garde gowns to an intimate audience of supporters. The line was a sophisticated showcase of gowns that focused heavily on beadwork, embroidery and texture. For inspiration she turned inward, and drew from the beauty of the lace, feathers and chiffon that were so prevalent in the lineup and reimagined them in a new way. Channeling the modern bride, most of the looks in the presentation felt more like on-trend artwork than wedding dresses, leaving a few gowns feeling like masterpieces and others looking a little less than glamorous.
As a collection the pieces failed to come together for one distinctive look, but individually they stood out. From the demure to the more provocative bride, there was a gown for every woman. Most were gorgeous renditions that clearly highlighted the beauty of Balilti’s craftsmanship and talent with textiles. One beautiful cap-sleeved gown with a softly plunging neckline was dripping in beaded fringe channeling a little Old Hollywood glamour. Another gown with a beaded long-sleeve bodice and pleated skirt seemed fit for royalty. A few misses included a lace front gown with sheer side panels and puffed sleeves, and a gown with geometric beaded panels and feather accents.
