As leaders in the jet charter industry, Stratos Jet Charters works hard to inform and educate our clients in all facets of charter travel. In this series, we will be putting the focus on some of the most popular jet charter airport destinations across the United States, beginning with jet charter to Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey.
Teterboro is the oldest operating airport in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area, with the first flight from the present airport site made in 1919. Only 12 miles from midtown Manhattan, Teterboro Airport is the most convenient gateway for jet charter and general aviation passengers heading to New York City and the surrounding area, from either domestic or international locations. Designated as a "reliever" airport, Teterboro’s focus is on removing the smaller and slower aircraft from the regional air traffic that would cause major congestion at the Port Authority's commercial airports. Thus the airport does not allow scheduled commercial air carrier operations. Teterboro is a 24-hour public use facility that offers both visual nonprecision and “all weather” precision landing capabilities.
In 2011 the airport had a total of 152,247 aircraft movements, a slight increase from the 149,530 movements in 2010. The historic ratios regarding these numbers are 61% of flights classified as general aviation, 38% categorized as private air charter, and less than 1% of flights classified as military.
The airport consists of 827 acres, with twenty three hangars on the site, comprising a total area of approximately 572,000 square feet. The availability of such extensive heated hangar space during the ice and snow of cold Northeastern winters is quite beneficial to private jet charter operators and consumers alike.
There are two runways at Teterboro, Runway 6-24 and 1-19. Runway 6-24 is 6,013 feet (1,833 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) wide, and underwent a complete rehabilitation in 2010. Runway 1-19 is 7,000 feet (2,100 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) wide, and was overlaid and grooved in the summer of 2000, which included the installation of centerline and touchdown zone lighting. Runway 1 is the preferred runway for noise abatement procedures. Both runways are equipped with High Intensity Runway Lights (HIRL), a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and other state-of-the-art approach and lighting systems.
Teterboro Airport also features some innovative developments in safety, with the installation of the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) on both runways. Developed by the Port Authority of NY & NJ in conjunction with the FAA, the EMAS is comprised of specially designed aerated cement blocks made to crumble under the weight of an aircraft, thus enabling a plane to stop safely and quickly in case of an emergency.
There are numerous transportation options available at Teterboro, including all major car rental companies. Luxury ground transportation can also be easily arranged by your Stratos Jet Charters agent. The Teterboro NJT rail station, along the Pasack Valley Line, as well as the Wood-Ridge station are both in close proximity to the airport.
