When Madge invites you to take a sneak peek into her closet, you do it, no questions asked. When she flies in outfits from Kunsthal in Rotterdam exclusively for your viewing pleasure, you thank your lucky stars. Today, Madonna, Material Girl and Macy's are teaming up for a one day pop-up exhibition from 6-8 p.m. featuring an exclusive inside look at Madonna’s most iconic fashion items. The event, "Madonna's Fashion Evolution", will be held at Macy's Century City in Los Angeles and will include famous looks like corsets from the 1990 “Blonde Ambition” concert tour designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Madonna handpicked each of the eight outfits with the help of her longtime stylist and costume designer Arianne Phillips as an attempt to boost her Material Girl Juniors line at Macy’s. This marks the first time the Queen of Pop has lent pieces from her own archives to be on public display, and specifically, looks from her costume history. “The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years,” Madonna told WWD.
Sold exclusively through Macy’s, Material Girl is designed in collaboration with Madge’s daughter, Lola. Though the generation of young women who will be purchasing clothing from the Material girl line may not have journeyed with Madonna through the years, they will certainly relate with the feeling of reinventing oneself and taking notes from one of the most influential women in history.
Named, one of Time Magazine’s "25 Most Powerful Women of the Past Century", Madonna has no doubt been a longtime contributor to the fashion world with her bold choices, shocking fashion-forward bustiers, and sometimes humorous selections (ahem, her 1999 Grammy appearance in a red kimono, with straight dark hair and pale face come to mind).
Among the pieces on display will be Madonna’s single-most famous look, and one replicated time and time again during 80s themed parties, is her 1984 wedding dress donned in “Like a Virgin”. The ensemble features a white lace corset, white tulle veil, fingerless gloves, white tulle skirt with dot motif, and a silver “Boy Toy” belt. Add in the black satin bustier with gold nipple caps and tassels from the “Open Your Heart” video along with the 1984 “Borderline” video neon green stretch skirt from designer Vivienne Westwood and artist Keith Haring? Well, we’ve got ourselves our own 80s party.
“It’s a magical thing to bring all these iconic pieces together in one place,” said Dari Marder, chief marketing officer at Iconix Brand Group— Madonna’s partner in Material Girl. “This will show customers how influential Madonna has been to fashion and how that influences Material Girl today.”
