“We are definitely not hands-off winemakers,” Kris says. “In order to be a really good winemaker, you have to be hands-on. Grapes need plenty of attention to be used in one of our wines as their natural life cycle is to simply ripen, fall to the ground, and begin the process of decay.”
Bruno and Kris aren’t really interested in building a destination winery. “We want to spend our money on the finest equipment rather than décor,” Kris says. But they are interested in the people who love their wines and so are in the process of implementing a new idea. Instead of an elaborate tour, they suggest guests contact them to schedule an appointment for a private visit and barrel tasting. “We want to share our philosophy on winemaking and give our guests a chance to taste the product in different stages.”
D’Alfonso˜Curran also has a tasting room conveniently located in downtown Solvang. There, guests do a side-by-side tasting of three different Pinots from the Santa Rita Hills AVA to help them appreciate the distinct flavors of this famous appellation. They can also appreciate great art, since 20 framed pieces by Kris and Bruno’s good friend, fellow wine lover, and Hollywood photographer Greg Gorman grace the walls. And, of course, they appreciate the science that goes into making D’Alfonso˜Curran’s distinctive wines.
